In a recent blog post Vitalik Buterin made an announcement about two subsidy programs that will be funded by Ethereum Foundation. The primary aim of these subsidy programs is to promote development taking place in the field of scalability.
Ethereum Subsidy Program

The aim of these programs is to reward participants who would be committing resources for tasks such as creation of layer 2 protocols and sharding.
In his post Vitalik mentioned that Ethereum foundation is inviting universities, companies and developers to participate in this subsidy program where subsidy amount would range between $50,000 and $1,000,000 (and possibly higher).
The subsidy amount will primarily depend upon factors such as:
- Team’s quality
- Proposed implementation’s scope
- How much progress the project makes over time
An Effort to Scale Ethereum
The main aim of this scaling program is to facilitate scaling of Ethereum so that it is able to meet the growing demand which is now close to about one million transactions per day.
Since sharding will play a crucial role in scalability of Ethereum, it is one of the fields that Vitalik wants developers and universities to focus on.
